Watch the transformation of five traditional bumboats into whimsical larger-than-life play things from childhood memories at the Singapore River. This colourful Bumboat Parade will bring back glowing nostalgic memories of childhood and growing up along Singapore River in the yesteryears. The design theme for the bumboat floats is centred on simple everyday objects from the past like Chinese wooden clogs, newspapers and horse racing calendars. What seemed to be mundane functional objects to the adults was a source of fascination for the children. Through a child’s eyes and imagination, these were precious treasures that could be transformed into play things and provide hours of entertainment and adventure at the river.

See the resemblance between the bumboats and the wooden Chinese clog? Wonder if a wooden Chinese clog will float or sink? Ever wish to make a giant paper boat and float it down the river? Catch the “Chinese Wooden Clog” Bumboat Float, “Giant Paper Boat” Bumboat Float, “Toy Sail Boat” Bumboat Float, “Newspaper Sampan” Bumboat Float and “Horse Racing Calendar” Bumboat Float. The Bumboat Parade which will sail past Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Marina Bay will certainly capture the imagination of all along the Singapore River.

On festival weekends, visitors can also enjoy enthralling performances by local award-winning dance company Fireflys during the Bumboat Parade on the “Chinese Wooden Clog” Bumboat Float and the “Newspaper Sampan” Bumboat Float. With the Singapore River and its rich history as the main inspiration, the performances will be a elebration of the wealth of heritage and culture that the river holds. Fusing elements of dance, music and fire while floating on water, this will be the first time that Fireflys will be performing on boats at the Singapore River and visitors are in for a rare visual treat.

One of the performers, Ian Foo Itt Fun says, “When we were first presented with the idea of performing on bumboats by Splash Entertainment, we were delighted. It is a rare opportunity for any performing artist to work on moving boats. The excitement of being part of this unique performance triggered our imagination and we came up with a number of fascinating ideas.

We had to take into consideration several elements including the environment, the heritage theme and the designs of the bumboats. Artistically and visually, the entire environment and the performance have to be cohesive. These elements inspired us to set our performance in the early period of the 1920s to 1960s. In sync with the two bumboat designs of “Giant Paper Boat” and “Chinese Wooden Clog”, the performance will be presented in two different distinctive themes, offering a glimpse of these two eras.”

Presented by Singapore River Cruises & Leisure, ‘Singapore River Childhood Memories’ Bumboat Parade and Fireflys Dance Performance are conceptualised and produced by Splash Entertainment.

Synopsis of the Heritage Bumboat Cruise

Sail back in time with fascinating characters, a satay seller and a popular courtesan and songstress, from the river’s past. This unique experience on board the Heritage Bumboat Cruise will promise interactive and immersive moments seen through the characters’ eyes. Onboard the bumboat, it is June 1930. Your guides are Awang played by Mohamad Faizal Bin Abdullah and Yu Hua played by Elizabeth Loh.

A satay seller who is proud to be descended from the pirates that ruled the Singapore river mouth, Awang’s memory is full of legends and stories of the river’s glorious past. A cheeky courtesan and songstress who charms her way up and down the river, Yu Hua (Jade Flower) has intimate knowledge of the river’s ins and outs – both in business and pleasure. Together, they provide a vivid and surprising glimpse into the river’s colorful past.

Join witty Awang and the sultry Yu Hua on a cruise down the Singapore River and back in time! Through their anecdotes and your imagination, the skyscrapers and pubs fade away to reveal a Singapore long-since vanished. Rediscover the Ice House, Forbidden Hill, Scandal’s Point, the pay-per-view storytellers and many other aspects of forgotten Singapore! Relive the violent clashes, the colonial follies and the scary tales! Marvel at the monuments that have survived the winds the change!

Conceived, written and directed by multi-talented Artistic Director, Jonathan Lim, this unique interactive cruise experience ensures that you will never see the river with the same eyes again!

I am very thrilled to have this chance to excavate and share some of the stories in a unique way, to offer the audience an unforgettably magical experience that will transform the way they view the Singapore River henceforth!”

To celebrate this yuletide season in a new refreshing way, Singapore River has been transformed into a canvas of lights and festivity.

The historic Read Bridge at Clarke Quay will be the centrestage for a series of exciting eclectic performances by Singapore’s young talents Artsylum Quartet, Funky Carollers and award-winning acts such as the Bellydancing Santarinas and the Fire Dancers from Fireflys.

 Catch these “live” performances every Saturday from 22 November 2009 to 2 January 2010, every hourly at 7.30pm, 8.30pm, 9.30pm and 10.30pm. Come down to the Singapore River and feel the magic of Christmas in the tropics!
